What is Bachelor of Physiotherapy?

Bachelor of Physiotherapy or BPT is an undergraduate programme that deals with the structure of the human body. The duration of this course is four years and once the duration of the programme is over, students are required to complete a six months internship. Physiotherapy is a kind of treatment that is carried through physical forces such as heat, electricity, mechanical pressure, and mechanical forces. Physical therapy is done in order to maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout the lifespan. Therapy helps to treat disorders without using drugs. Physiotherapists have a thorough understanding of the human anatomy and the intricacies of bones, muscles and nerves.

Types of Bachelor of Physiotherapy

BPT is an undergraduate programme in which students learn to deal with the physical movement of the body aiming to cure disorders of the candidates. BPT Eligibility

To get admission into the Bachelor of Physiotherapy, candidates must fulfill the conditions and requirements prescribed by the concerned authorities. Candidates who fail to meet the requirements will not be able to get admission into the institute. It should be noted that the eligibility criteria may be different from institute to institute. Candidates will be required to meet the eligibility criteria specified by the respective institutes.

• Should have passed 10+2 with a minimum of 50 percent marks from a recognized institute.

• Should have completed 10+2 having Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as compulsory subjects.

• Candidates should have passed in English.

• Candidates should have completed the age of 17 years at the time of admission.

University Wise BPT Eligibility Criteria

• Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University

Candidates seeking admission offered by Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University are required to appear for IPU CET entrance exam. The authorities will offer admission on the basis of merit or rank obtained by the candidates in the entrance exam. It should be noted that candidates must have passed class 12th with 50 percent marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Also, they should have passed in English.

• Medical Trust Institute of Medical Sciences, Cochin

MTIMS offers various courses in healthcare education including Bachelor’s in Physiotherapy. Candidates passed higher secondary examination of the Board of Higher Secondary Education, Kerala or equivalent with a minimum of 50% marks in Biology and 50 percent marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology taken together. The total intake of candidates in the institute for BPT is 30.

• Vel’s Institute of Science Technology and Advanced Studies, Chennai

VELS University has specified the eligibility criteria for admission into BPT course. Candidates should have obtained a minimum of 50 percent of marks in aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Botany & Zoology.

• SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Chennai

In order to be eligible for admission into SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Chennai, candidates should have passed 10+2 with at least 60 percent marks and with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as main subjects.

Bachelor of Physiotherapy Admissions

Admission into the BPT programme is done on the basis of the candidate’s performance in the entrance examination. To appear for the entrance exam, candidates are first required to fill out the application form by filling out some basic details such as personal, contact, and academic. It should be noted that the application process will be available only for a specified time period. Only those candidates who will submit the application form before the last date will be able to appear for the exam. All the registered candidates will be able to download the admit card. Candidates must carry the admit card to the examination centre on the test day.

Before filling out the application form, candidates should ensure that they meet the required eligibility criteria. Candidates failing to meet the prescribed conditions and requirements will be disqualified.

The authorities prepare a merit list based on the marks obtained. This admission procedure is general and may vary as per the institute or university that the student is applying for.

• IPU CET

Indraprastha University Common Entrance Test (IPU CET) is conducted by GGSIPU. The university conducted the exam for admission into BPT and many other undergraduate courses. The entrance exam for admission into bachelor of physiotherapy comprises three subjects – Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Maths.

Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board conducts BCECE for admission into different professional courses in Engineering, Agriculture, and Medicine colleges under the Government of Bihar.

• NEET is another entrance examination that is accepted by some institutes to offer admission into BPT. NEET is not a mandatory test for admission. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency for admission into the best institutes. Each year, lakhs of aspirants appear for the exam. • Orthopedic Physiotherapy

A knowledge of the anatomy, physiology and pathology of skeleton and soft tissues covers orthopedic physiotherapy. Orthopedics are concerned with the management of the disorders related to the musculoskeletal system. Some of the common problems that are treated by Orthopedics include back and neck pain, hip fracture, osteoporosis, arthritis, and bursitis.

• Neurological Physiotherapy

It is a specialization which is associated with the treatment of people who have problems with movement and other functions due to dysfunctioning within the body’s nervous and neuromuscular system. Any damage caused to the central nervous system including the brain and spinal cord leads to problems in movement and other body functions. Some of the neurological conditions that require physiotherapy are spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, and problems in balancing.

• Pediatrics Physiotherapy

It is a specialization that deals with the development of a baby, particularly in the development of a movement. Paediatricians work towards improving the quality of life of children with neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy and autism. .

• Geriatrics Physiotherapy

This specialization deals with the disorders in older adults. Disorders such as osteoporosis, and arthritis in the elderly are treated by a physiotherapist who has specialized in this field.
